Jeremy Zander – Director of Bands

Jeremy Zander is in his seventh year as a band director in Beaverton School District. He has been the director of bands at Southridge High School since 2010 and is excited to work with the Mountainside community to build an excellent band program from the ground up. Prior to his time at Southridge, Mr. Zander taught middle school band for three years in Tigard-Tualatin School District and two years in Salem-Keizer Public Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education & Flute Performance from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from Sam Houston State University. While at the University of Oregon, he received the Outstanding Service Award and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Mr. Zander’s responsibilities at Mountainside include instructing and conducting the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Music Theory course. Mr. Zander is active as an adjudicator and clinician for several programs around the Pacific Northwest. He is a member of Oregon Music Education Association, the Oregon Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and currently serves as OMEA’s representative to the Oregon Schools Activities Association.

Blake Kuroiwa – Auxiliary Director of Bands

Blake Kuroiwa is a teacher at Mountainside High School in the Beaverton School District. During the school day, Blake teaches STEM Chemistry as well as the AVID Elective class. In addition, he severs as Mountainside’s Auxiliary Director of Bands along side, Jeremy Zander. In this role, Blake directs and conducts the marching band, basketball band, and the musical pit orchestra. Blake is excited and honored to be able to a part of the Mountainside community in such an integral way! As a graduate from Pacific University, he has a Master of Arts in Teaching and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Music Education, & Music Performance.

Blake is an active instructor of the marching pageantry community in the Pacific Northwest. He has worked at numerous schools in the area including Sherwood HS, Westview HS, Southridge HS, Liberty HS, Mt. View MS, Highland Park MS, Meadow Park MS, and West Hills Christian School. Currently, he is the Program Director and Music Caption Head at Mountainside HS. In addition, he serves as the secretary for the Northwest Association for Performing Arts (NWAPA).

Katy Burns – Director of Dance & Guard Ensembles

Katy is returning to Mountianside this year, and she is very excited to see what this year has in store! Katy worked with Southridge High School for 7 years, 6 of which she was the Colorguard Director. She also taught the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps for 5 years, 2 of which she was the Assistant Colorguard Caption Head. Outside of colorguard she also works with Mountainside’s Drama program choreographing their musical productions. A Seattle native, Katy began her colorguard career at the age of 7, where she performed with Full Circle Winterguard for 11 years. In 2009 she traveled south to the Portland area where she performed with North by Northwest Winterguard in 2009, OCIndoor 2011-2013, and OCIndepentent 2014. Katy was a member of the Seattle Cascades Drum Corps in 2005, 2006 and 2007. She aged out in 2011 with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps.

Kevin Jacobs – Visual Designer

Kevin Jacobs designs and instructs the visual technique, choreography, and drill for the Mountainside marching program. Kevin is currently a senior at Portland State University majoring in music education. There, he plays principle horn in the Portland State Wind Symphony. He got his start in music right here in Oregon where he marched four years of high school marching band, three years of indoor activities, and marched a season with the Oregon Crusaders. Since graduating, he has taught at the Mountainside High School Marching Band and Sherwood High School Marching Band. In the future, Kevin plans to continue to help teach marching band and other related activities while working towards his degree in music education.

Jeff Bush – Director of Percussion Ensembles

Jeff Bush is a full-time percussion educator, arranger and visual designer based in the Portland, OR area. He keeps an active private studio in drum set, concert and rudimental percussion. Jeff attended the University of North Texas where he was a member of the PASIC Champion UNT Drumline in 1988 and 1990.

For over 30 years Jeff has served as a director of percussion for many award winning high school and independent percussion programs around the Pacific Northwest. He built the Grants Pass HS Indoor Ensemble starting in 1995 until 2002. Grants Pass HS became the first World Class Percussion Ensemble in the Pacific Northwest capturing 14 out of a possible 16 Northwest Percussion titles during his tenure. In 2009 he was the founder of the Oregon Crusaders Indoor Percussion Ensemble. Oregon Crusaders Indoor earned the 2009 WGI Independent A Class Gold Medal in their first year of existence! In 2010 OCI was promoted to Independent Open Class and took home the WGI Bronze Medal from the World Championships.

Jeff is currently the Director of Percussion for Mountainside HS in the Beaverton, OR School District and Sherwood HS in the Sherwood, OR School District. The Sherwood Percussion Ensemble is the 3-time NWAPA Open Class Champion from 2017 to 2019 and two time reigning OSAA Concert Percussion Ensemble Champion in 2018 and 2019. He is very passionate about indoor percussion ensembles and hopes to build one at Mountainside.

Jeff’s marching experience includes the Marauders and Blue Devils Drum Corps organizations. He has served as the percussion caption head with the Marauders, River City Railmen, Seattle Cascades and Oregon Crusaders Drum Corps.

Along with band director Steve Robertson, Jeff’s colleague and mentor, he co-founded the Northwest Indoor Percussion Circuit which is now known as NWAPA.

Jeff is an Innovative Percussion Education Artist and the current Vice President for percussion for NWAPA.
