Jeremy Zander - Director of Bands

Jeremy Zander is in his seventh year as a band director in Beaverton School District. He has been the director of bands at Southridge High School since 2010 and is excited to work with the Mountainside community to build an excellent band program from the ground up. Prior to his time at Southridge, Mr. Zander taught middle school band for three years in Tigard-Tualatin School District and two years in Salem-Keizer Public Schools. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education & Flute Performance from the University of Oregon and a Master of Music from Sam Houston State University. While at the University of Oregon, he received the Outstanding Service Award and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

 

Mr. Zander's responsibilities at Mountainside include instructing and conducting the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Music Theory course. Mr. Zander is active as an adjudicator and clinician for several programs around the Pacific Northwest. He is a member of Oregon Music Education Association, the Oregon Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and currently serves as OMEA's representative to the Oregon Schools Activities Association.

Blake Kuroiwa - Music Instructor

 

Blake Kuroiwa is a student at Pacific University.  He is completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Music Education, and Music Performance before obtaining his Masters of Arts of Teaching at Pacific’s Woodburn campus.  While at Pacific, Blake was an active member of the Music and Chemistry Club while being a Resident Assistant for three years.  He was also the program administrator for the Pacific University String Project, which offers affordable string education to community students while giving music education students teaching experience.

At Pacific, Blake has been a member of the Symphonic Band and Philharmonic Orchestra for the past five years.  For the last few years, he has been the principal horn for both ensembles.  In his last year, Blake participated in Pacific’s production of Sondheim’s Into the Woods as the horn player.

Since 2012, Blake has worked with many Portland area band programs including Meadow Park & Highland Park Middl Schools, and Liberty, Sherwood, Westview, and Southridge High Schools.  He has also been a counselor for the Metro Honor Band Camp and Northwest Band Camps for numerous years. 

Blake is very passionate about teaching and is excited to the receive his MAT degree, which will certify him to teach high school chemistry and band.

 

Rachel Leong - Pit Instructor

Rachel Leong is currently a student at Portland State University. She is in the process of completing her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Marketing, as well as a Minor in Music and an Athletic and Outdoor Certificate. She is also a regular qualifier for PSU's Dean's List, a category of students who consistently achieve academic excellence. Rachel is also an active member of the PSU Percussion Ensemble and studies viola privately. In previous years, Rachel was a member of the University of Puget Sound's orchestra, wind ensemble, percussion ensemble, and chamber quartet. 
Rachel has been a staff member to many NWAPA ensembles in the circuit including Sherwood, Beaverton, Evergreen, Tigard, and Lincoln High Schools. In addition to her work as a front ensemble technician, Rachel also teaches mallet and string students privately, and has helped her students achieve outstanding recognition within district competitions. 
In order to help continue her constant pursuit for excellence, Rachel is also an active member of local independent ensembles. Rachel was a member of the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps' 2013, 2014, and 2016 programs, and was a featured soloist in her last 2 years of participation. Rachel has also been a member of the Oregon Crusaders Indoor, having been a member in the 2015, 2016, and 2017 seasons. Rachel believes that in order to be an effective teacher, a part of her must remain a student as well.
