Our marching band is a corps-style, modern ensemble that combines music, movement, and visual storytelling. We perform custom-written, innovative shows at home football games and several competitions throughout the fall season (August through early November). Students develop musical and marching skills while being part of a high-energy, team-focused performance group. Students will work hard, develop long-lasting friendships, learn, grow as musicians and people, and have a lot of fun!
The color guard is a unit of the marching band that focuses on dance, particularly with the use of equipment such as flags, sabers, and rifles. The color guard is very important to the visual package of the marching band show, providing splashes of color and unified movement that really grabs the audience’s attention. Outside of the marching band season, our color guard competes as a standalone unit during the Winter Guard season.
If a student wishes to participate in marching band in the brass section, woodwind section, or percussion section, they may do so, provided one of the following is true:
They will be enrolled in Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble for the upcoming school year at MHS.
They are an 8th grade student who lives within the MHS attendance boundary, are enrolled in the band class at their school, and have the recommendation of their middle school band teacher.
They are 8th-12 grade students who live within the MHS attendance boundary who are either home-schooled or attend one of the BSD option schools.
If a student wishes to participate in color guard, they may do so, provided they live within the MHS attendance boundary and are in grades 8-12. There is no requirement for color guard students to be enrolled in a band class (but many color guard members also play in band!)
Marching band holds a summer band camp that typically runs for two full weeks (excluding Sunday) and begins three weeks before the first week of school.
Once school begins, rehearsals will take place three evenings per week. The length and time of these rehearsals varies year to year based on sharing the fields with other MHS teams, but these rehearsals will be added to our calendar (link) as soon as we have it ready!
In addition, plan for each Saturday during the marching band season to be either a rehearsal (9am-4pm) or a competition (full day), with the exception of Labor Day weekend.
Click on the Band Calendar link on this website to see exact dates/times for all rehearsals and events, and double check the day before, as times do sometimes change.
While both types of ensembles have flutes, clarinets, trumpets and saxophones, several other instruments will be slightly different in the marching band. Read on:
Oboes/Bassoons: these are not in the marching band. Double reed musicians have their choice of any instrument to play in marching band, but usually find learning a flute, clarinet, or saxophone to be very achievable. Alternately, we have had double reed musicians play in percussion, join the color guard, play a brass instrument, or even become drum major!
French horns: in marching band, French horn players play a bell-front variation of the horn called a mellophone. The fingerings are almost identical to horn, and the embouchure is very similar. This is an easy transition to make!
Trombone: in our marching band, we have all trombone players learn the marching baritone. This using fingerings instead of slide positions, but the mouthpiece/embouchure is identical to trombone. Most trombonists find the switch to be very achievable, and feel comfortable on the baritone horn just a couple days into band camp
Euphonium/Baritone: we provide bell front versions of the baritone/euphonium
Tuba: tubists will use our Sousaphones for marching band
Yes! Aside from what was mentioned above, it is not uncommon for a student to learn a different instrument for marching band. This might be a simple switch such as flute to saxophone, or it might be changing instrument families entirely, like a clarinet player learning mellophone, or a saxophonist joining the drum line. Simply speak to the directors to find out more about this if this is something you’re interested in!
Yes, concurrent enrollment in a band class is a requirement for marching band except for members of color guard, home-school students, or students who attend a BSD option school that does not have a band program but who live within the MHS attendance boundary.

This year the google registration form did not send a copy of your sign up form responses to parents, so you can't check your email to see if you filled out the form, but your student can tell if they are signed up by following these steps:
Go to https://google.com/drive and sign in with your BSD student account, e.g. 400000@bsd48.org
Click the "Shared with me" menu item in Google Drive. If you see the folder "MHS Marching Band Student Folder 2025" shared with your student, then they have successfully registered for Fall 2025 Marching Band! (This is where your student can download the music they will be performing.)
The following information was included in the registration form.

At this time, MBB can only offer up to 50% financial aid with a minimum volunteer requirement.

After this registration form is completed, it will take several days to process the registration and add new students to our Presto database. Payment Timeline
The following outlines MBB’s timeline and procedure for payment for each season:
Before the season starts, registration forms for the season will be sent out with specified payment dates and/or payment plans. An email will be generated when you complete the registration form to remind you about the payment amount and date(s)/plan.
During the season, a reminder email will be sent to parents/guardians ONLY one week before the payment date stated in the registration form.
Before the first competition, another reminder email will be sent including the scholarship form to remind families we have a partial scholarship available.
Before the last competition, a sealed, physical letter will be sent home with your student after a rehearsal for the parent/guardian about the outstanding fees. An email notification to the parent/guardian will also be sent about this letter. This letter and email will include a FINAL payment date. The director(s) of the ensemble will be notified about the outstanding balance but no specific amounts stated.
If the completed payment is not made or there is no communication by the final payment date, a phone call to the necessary parent/guardian will be made 5 days AFTER the due date.
If nothing is done after the phone call and the agreed upon decision, the student will not be eligible for the following season until the outstanding balance is resolved. The director and all necessary parties will be informed of this decision.
Please remember that our treasurer(s) are volunteers and will be as prompt as possible. We try our best to be flexible and understanding in all cases but failure to communicate your situation in a reasonable and timely manner will be detrimental to you and your student.
